Warner Bros. has yet give us official word on this, but it looks like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts I and II are going to be released in 3D. I never read these books (start the stone-throwing), but I do think the movies have all been pretty good.
Part I is set for release November 19 and part II should hit theaters July 15, 2011.
Do you think 3D can contribute much to these films, or is this just part of a larger gimmick in the cinema world?

There’s going to be a 3D Smurfs movie. NPH is in it. Oh my.
On a scale of one to “excited,” how excited are you for a 3D Smurfs experience?
Also, the poster lies — it’s set for a July ‘11 release as of now.

This whole 3D fad is totally fascinating to me. When television came out, widescreen feature films shortly followed to get people out of their houses and back into the theaters. Now, we’ve all got fantastic home entertainment systems (or at least I know that some people do) and it’s easier than ever to wait to rent, download, or watch instantly on your netflix account and save the 15 bucks you would’ve thrown down for popcorn and soda. So now they introduce (or re-introduce, maybe) 3D into theaters, and as far as I can tell, it’s working.
But this makes 3D come off as just a gimmick, a marketing ploy, and not something that true “artists” (pron. arteests) would be interested in, right?
Ah, but according to the AVClub via Variety, Martin Scorcese’s next film, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, will be shot in 3D. Here’s what they say:
“Shooting it in 3D, however, is kind of a gutsy move on his part considering the film is independently produced, meaning studio pressure to get that 3D dolla dolla had zero influence on Scorsese’s decision; he just really, really wants to do it.”
So what do you guys think about that??
